Brooklyn Joe Lieber: American Tattoo Master Book
About this item
A window into the roots of American tattooing. Brooklyn Joe Lieber: American Tattoo Master collects the artwork and legacy of one of the most influential early tattoo artists of the 20th century. Lieber (1888–1953) worked during tattooing’s formative years and is widely considered a mentor to Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, sharing and trading hundreds of designs that helped shape what later became the classic American traditional style.
This large-format hardcover showcases Lieber’s flash sheets, paintings, and historical material, presenting bold traditional designs that rival the iconic Sailor Jerry collections. With more than 100 sheets of classic flash reproduced across 88 pages, the book captures a pivotal moment in tattoo history when traveling artists and early West Coast shops helped define the visual language still used today.
Written by Don Ed Hardy and published by Hardy Marks, the book preserves Lieber’s designs and highlights his role in shaping the imagery that continues to influence tattooers around the world.

A powerful look at one of the artists who helped define American tattoo design.
Brooklyn Joe Lieber - American Tattoo Master: This is simply one of the best historic Traditional Flash books I have ever seen. This is a book which rivals the classic Sailor Jerry volumes and will surely become a classic very soon. The designs are beautifully drawn and painted very much in the style of Sailor Jerry but with Brooklyn Joe's style printed on them. Brooklyn Joe Lieber worked in the very early 1900s and seems to be the tattooer who first came along with what we know as the Sailor Jerry style and Jerry never credited Joe for this. Amazing designs with real class!!! Over 100 sheets shown!!
