Born in Victorian England, Burchett was a gifted tattoo artist and advocate of tattooing for most of his long life.
Sailors, soldiers, carnival performers, and kings were tattooed by Burchett, whose career spanning the turbulent years between the reign of Queen Victoria to the ascendancy of Queen Elizabeth.
His distinctive talents, combined with his enthusiastic interest in the cultural history of his profession, helped propel tattooing through the 20th century to where it is today.
